What Does Home Look Like?

Good Morning.

Have signed on for the WordPress Photography Class.

Day One Assignment: Home & Getting Oriented

Assignment One: Home is elusive. When we think about this word, we might picture different physical locations. And while home is often found on a map, it can also be less tangible: a loved one, a state of mind.

I chose my favorite picture of my Mother, who recently passed, and this poem by Rumi, one of our favorites  she enjoyed having me read out loud to her.

This being human is a guest house.

Every morning a new arrival.

A joy, a depression, a meanness,

some momentary awareness comes

as an unexpected visitor.

Welcome and entertain them all!

Even if they are a crowd of sorrows,

who violently sweep your house

empty of it’s furniture

still, treat each guest honorably.

She may be clearing you out

For some new delight.

The dark thought, the shame, the malice,

Meet them

at the door laughing,

and invite them in.

Be grateful for whoever comes,

because each has been sent

as a guide from beyond.

  1. Your mom is such a cool chick! The poem I love too, very powerful.

How did you create the post though? Sorry getting technical here. Did you put in the poem first then the photos? We have the same theme and I have a hard time trying to wrap words around images so I usually just end up breaking my stories with one photo or a collage of photos in the middle.

    1. I find myself very often frustrated with the placement of photos. Love the simplicity of my Theme, but often wonder if I need to change to something more photo friendly. I am new to blogging and so there may be some very easy ways of placing these photos I haven’t figured out yet. Hopefully we will touch on that in Photo101. Meantime, using my submission today “Returning Late To Almafi” as the example:
      1. Open New Post
      2. Hit the space bar several times.
      3. In top menu choose: Click Align Right
Put the words in. They will fall into place
from right to left, but in the right order.
4.Return cursor to top left margin space you created.
      5. Drop your photos in. The text and the photos will all go weird, but stay steady.
      6. Click on a photo. A menu box will show up above the individual photo. Choose
      ‘align left’
      7. Repeat with photos as needed and words and photos will be rightly placed.

I look forward to knowing how to do this easier!

          1. Sure will! In fact (I don’t know if you need this), just a random thought popped up in my head right now as I’m typing this, last night as I was browsing over The Commons, I happened to read Michelle’s reply to someone asking about gallery photos. I usually make my gallery through picmonkey.com and I never realized that you can do it from your own draft post. Makes it so much easier (I have yet to try it though)!
