A Bloody Red And A Loyal Companion

“The moon is a loyal companion.
It never leaves. It’s always there, watching, steadfast, knowing us in our light and dark moments, changing forever just as we do. Every day it’s a different version of itself. Sometimes weak and wan, sometimes strong and full of light. The moon understands what it means to be human.
Uncertain. Alone. Cratered by imperfections.”
Tahereh Mafi, Shatter Me

There is a big sky event coming over the weekend and we have all been invited. The Full Moon is pulling out all the stops for a Lunar Eclipse. Not only will the moon be full, it will be at it’s closest point of orbit around our dear Mother Earth. Appearing as a Super-Moon, she will perform for our pleasure appearing to be a full 33% brighter and 14%larger than normal. There is no missing this show whether  you bring  your eyes,  binoculars,  or a telescope.

Meanwhile, Mother Earth will come between the moon and the sun, casting a shadow over the moon,  creating the total Lunar Eclipse.

Now about that blood:. Due to all of the scattering light off the Earth’s atmosphere, the close proximity of the moon to earth, and the fullness, the moon will not  disappear into darkness, but glow a bloody red color.

The Algonquin Native Americans celebrated and honored the Blood Moon as a time of good fortune and joy. The time of the year when corn and squash, and other crops would ripen. Sunday nights Harvest Moon, named for the extra light provided to farmers harvesting crops, is waiting for you to come on outside and join in the joyous festivities.

Realizing that you, my dearest readers, are positioned all over our planet, here are the party time-zones:

In the US, Canada, and Central and South America, this rare Total Lunar Eclipse of a Supermoon will begin on the evening of September 27, 2015. In Europe, South/East Asia, Africa, the Arctic, and in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian Oceans it starts after midnight on September 28, 2015. You can click on the links for more precise time details for your exact location.

There is no point making excuses why you won’t come to this global party with me. The next one won’t be held until 2033, and I will be attending that one as cosmic stardust.IMG_0325
