“If freckles were lovely
And day was night,
And measles were nice
And a lie warn’t a lie,
Life would be delight,–
But things

Couldn’t go right

For in such a sad plight
I wouldn’t be I.

If earth was heaven
And now was hence,
And past was present
And false was true,
There might be
Some sense
But I’d be
In suspense
For on such a pretense
You wouldn’t
Be you.

And globes were square,
And dirt was cleanly
And tears were glee
Things would seem
Yet they’d all
For if here
Was there
We wouldn’t be we.”

In response to WordPress Weekly Photo: Subject  Opposites

Happy Independence Day to the United States.  Today Americans  celebrate the Declaration of Freedom from Britain while Britain considers their next best steps, following  their recent vote of freedom from the European Union.

Just  listen to Lady Gaga sing our  National Athem.

  1. Johanna, sometimes a poem or piece of writing will just hit you – right in the gut, right in the heart! This poem is one such example, how have I never seen it before?!! You couldn’t have chosen anything better for opposite theme and thank you so much for sharing. I’m now off to explore more eecummings. Hope you had a lovely 4th July celebrations. 😀

  2. Big Smile at reading your kind words. Thank you so very much and know that I appreciate them. When I saw this weeks WordPress Photo Theme was ‘Opposites’ I immediately knew I would use this favorite of mine by E.E. Cummings, and my lifelong relationship with Sweet Terry.
All my best to you, Jim, and thank you for the visit.

  3. Of all I read on this Independence Day, nothing brought more joy than EE Cummins “If” and Lady GaGa’s rendition of the National Anthem. I remember after she sang it at the Super Bowl my wife and I (two complete opposites as well) looked at one another and echoed “Beautiful!” I could see the tears in Tony Bennet’s eyes. Thank you, JoHanna.
