“She made broken look beautiful
and strong look invincible.
She walked with the Universe
on her shoulders and made it
look like a pair of wings.”
― Ariana Danc
Surprised, thrilled, and optimism restored in response to The January 21, 2017 Global Women’s March. The strength, beauty, and gracefulness of this beloved statute in Sorrento Italy speaks to me and for me.

Isn’t that the most beautiful line? I have known so many women whom this phrase perfectly and respectfully describes. Thank you for your kind words.

Beautiful all-encompassing post, Johanna. The statue is stunning, powerful but ethereal and I’ve read the poem a few times and love it. The turn out across the globe on the 21st was amazing and such a force for good. We were talking abOut what we couldn’t imagine being without – arts wise- – whilst my son choose music, he’s a musician, I said I could not imagine not being able to read – it is an integeral part of my life, freedom, magic, travel an arms length away! Literacy is core in today’s world and any support is to be celebrated. I used to volunteer as a reader/listener at my son’s school and they had to shoo me away after the morning session, it gave me as much as I helped them!

Your comments resound with appreciation for just how important our voices/actions are needed right now to protect and grow those things which we value. Anyone considering becoming involved in helping another learn to read, whether a child or adult, will find as you did, that it is one of the most empowering and rewarding things you can do for another.
One of the things I found to be most interesting is the intricate and elaborate skill sets people develop to navigate their lives, while hiding the fact they can’t read..are often much harder than the learning to read itself. It’s a big breakthrough moment for adult learners. Thank you Annika for your contribution to the conversation.
